FIAT Confident 500 Sales Will Blossom In U.S.

From Cars.com via USAToday.com – After a rough start in the U.S., Fiat is getting more confident that it can make a hit out of its little, bulbous 500 sedan. Jennifer Geiger of Cars.com’s Kicking Tires explains:

Fiat thinks the key is offering a variety of 500s to meeting the needs of different owners. For now, there is the original two-door, the convertible, including a Gucci limited edition and the newest and most aggressive, the sporty Abarth.

Officials are hoping that the amped-up Abarth will inject a little pep in the 500′s step. The high-performance version of Fiat’s minicar trades the regular 101-horsepower, 1.4-liter four-cylinder engine for a 160-hp, turbocharged four-cylinder. Other Abarth upgrades include track-tuned suspension and brakes, dual exhaust, 16-inch aluminum wheels and specific exterior styling cues. A base 500 starts at $15,000, the Abarth at $22,000.

The brand’s marketing chief, Tim Kuniskis, says with more than 800,000 500s having been sold overseas, “We think the success in Europe can be duplicated here.”

He lists several factors that could make the 500 appealing to Americans:

Chief among them is escalating gas prices. The regular 500 gets 30 miles a gallon in the city, 38 mpg on the highway, and the Abarth version gets 28/34 mpg. Fiat’s ad campaign should help, too: After overcoming the foibles of the early Jennifer Lopez ads, Fiat is finding success with its TV spots like the one from the Super Bowl and a new one starring bad-boy actor Charlie Sheen.

Kuniskis notes there are signs that the brand’s momentum is building. The 500 has more than 500,000 Facebook fans, but actual consumers are starting to warm to the car, too. The $23,500 Gucci version sold out quickly, and more than 130,000 people spent the time to take a seat in a 500 at the 2012 Chicago Auto Show.

Dual FIAT Review: 500c and Abarth Shine in the Sun

From The Epoch Times’ Durhl Caussey - The Fiat 500c is a work horse, plying through rush hour traffic, taking you to the office or classroom. Bad weather, bumpy roads, or crowded expressways are minor inconveniences for such a capable and dependable vehicle.

Or the 500c can be a play pony, carrying you to trendy restaurants or a special party where guests and staff admire and value a quality product that is styled with a wardrobe dressed in Italian-designed fabrics with unique stitching and soft touch accents surrounded by chrome and red brake calipers.

The streets of New York City gave the 500c a test, but even the Big Apple—with potholes, cobblestone streets, slippery highways, and bumpy roadways—could not keep this lively convertible from doing Fiat proud. And this driver shared that pride with a grade of A-plus.

The electric top goes back in stages and easily slides into the rear spoiler even at a speed of 60 mph, then completely folds down once you have reached 50 mph.

Naturally when the roof is down some body strength is lost, but the structure and power are still there, causing little shake even on terrible roadways. Even the roadway from the city up the Hudson River to the peaceful community of Rhinecliff was comfortable.

Electronic stability control, hill start assist, rear park assist, and 4-wheel anti-lock brakes are four reasons the 500c can take on the biggest and baddest road conditions NYC had to offer.

The 1.4 SOHC 16-valve MultiAir Inline 4-cylinders with 6-speed automatic transmission provided the power that allows 500c to cruise nicely at 80 mph and even 90 mph if the need arises. All you need is a tap of the foot.

Outwardly the 500c may look a little like any other small car. But when this 6 foot, 220 lbs of Big Ole Texas Boy slides in behind the leather-wrapped steering that offers tilt position, I am reminded how looks can be deceiving.

Cabin Comfort

The driver’s seat was roomy comfortable, large enough for my slightly overbearing hips yet positioning me so that the vehicle information center was easily approachable. Driver seat memory with driver’s height adjustment made the driving comfortable at the start and continued throughout.

Sirius XM satellite radio, AM/CM/CD/MP3 radio with audio jack provides a time for collective thinking or work encouragement through the entertainment system.

For a small car the Fiat 500c is relatively quiet, helping to add positive dimensions to the cab experience. Fiat’s Blue&Me infotainment system with hands-free communication and USB port allowed me to handle incoming information and welcome dialogue.

The Fiat 500c has a base price of $23,500, but an optional luxury leather package and TomTom Navigation system adds another $2,500.

EPA fuel economy estimates city mpg at 27 and highway mpg at 32. During my drive in the city and north along the Hudson River and back, I averaged 35 mpg.

Fiat brings Abarth to the United States, which seems to highlight the brand in helping to carry the Italian mantel of high performance to American streets.

What is the 2012 Helicopter Egg Drop?

From Patch.com’s Molly Buccini - Signs having been popping up around Danvers and Peabody for the 2012 Helicopter Egg Drop.

Wondering what exactly the egg drop is? We have you covered in today’s You Ask…Patch Answers.

The Egg Drop, sponsored by the Next Level Church, is taking place at a hidden location, so participants will meet at the Liberty Tree Mall on Easter Sunday, April 8 at 10 a.m.

The Egg Drop is happening in conjunction with Next Level Church’s opening in Danvers.

When participants get to the hidden location, tens of thousands of plastic eggs, filled with candy & prizes, will be dropped from a helicopter onto a grass field.

For safety purposes, kids are being split into different age groups while they search for eggs. Registration is mandatory to participate.

The Next Level Church currently has two other locations in Newington, NH and Portland, ME, as well as online sermons.

If you’re wondering more about Next Level Church, check out the Egg Drop’s official website for more details on their beliefs.

The Egg Drop is free, but the Next Level Church is asking everyone to bring canned food to donate to My Brother’s Table, who they’ve described as “one of our great community partners.”

Fiat, Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne Interviewed on 60 Minutes

From AutoguideFiat boss Sergio Marchionne was featured yesterday on CBS’ 60 Minutes discussing his life as the head of both Fiat, Chrysler and how he brought the American brand back to health from the brink of collapse.

In the interview, Marchionne addresses the state Chrysler was in when he came on board to resurrect the company, saying employees were afraid and that the hierarchical corporate structure in place was crippling to operation.

The 13-minute clip also looks at the upcoming Dodge Dart, which first debuted in January at the Detroit Auto Show. We also get a peek into Marchionne’s life in Italy, where he isn’ allowed to go anywhere without being in a bullet-proof car with police escorts.

Watch the video below, it’s well worth the time.

FIAT “Winning” with Charlie Sheen Commercial

Fiat and Charlie Sheen hardly seem like a match made in…well, anywhere, but the controversial superstar with “tiger blood” may have imparted his “winning” ways to Fiat with his new house arrest commercial.

Don’t believe for a second that Fiat-Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne didn’t know what he was doing when he stuck with the runner-up commercial to Catrinel Menghia’s “Seduction” spot aired at the Super Bowl.

Marchionne’s key Chrysler Chief Marketing Officer Olivier Francois said of  the Abarth and Sheen, “The Fiat 500 Abarth is the bad boy of the Fiat vehicle lineup and Charlie Sheen personifies the edgy and fun attributes of the Fiat 500 Abarth in ‘House Arrest.”

The ad does a great job of showing the contrast between the 500 model first introduced to U.S. consumers, and the sporty, “evil” side of the 500 infused with legendary racing attributes of Karl Abarth.

With Menghia and Sheen, the general population has now forgotten about Jennifer Lopez commercials and is ready to embrace Fiat’s entire automotive line, which they intend to add to beginning with the Abarth (reserve yours here) in the next month, and then with the 500L in 2013.

Check out the video below, and be sure to visit Kelly FIAT of Peabody to pick up your new FIAT 500 Abarth today!

Borders site is next chapter for auto dealer

From The Salem News’ Ethan Forman- DANVERS — Danvers-based Kelly Automotive Group is ramping up expansion plans along Route 114 in both Danvers and Peabody.

Kelly is mulling the creation of a two-story dealership out of the vacant former Borders Books and Music store on Andover Street in Peabody. The Danvers native and the company’s president, Brian Kelly, acquired the property in December.

Kelly’s plans also include the construction of a new Volkswagen dealership at 72 Andover St. in Danvers, where he presently operates a Fiat dealership. This plan is coming before the Danvers Planning Board on Tuesday.

It is possible Kelly may move his Fiat dealership either to his Jeep-Chrysler dealership on Route 1 in Lynnfield, Kelly said. It is also possible the former bookstore at 151 Andover St. could become the new home to the tiny, stylish Italian import.

In December, Kelly, as trustee of 151 Andover Street Realty Trust, bought the 1.57-acre Borders site, with its nearly 24,400 square-foot-building, for $1, according to the deed.

The property was conveyed to Kelly by Select Sites of the North Shore LLC, and is subject to the mortgage, which has a more than $5 million unpaid balance, along with assignments of certain leases and rents. The property is assessed at nearly $3.4 million, according to city records.

“I bought the note the from the bank,” said Kelly, who added he managed to acquire the property in an online auction.

The Borders building was built in 1994, according to city records. It closed last year after the nation’s second-largest bookstore company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.

Kelly is now doing exploratory work to see if the existing building can be turned into a car dealership. Kelly is trying to find out if the second floor can bear the weight of vehicles in what would become a glassed-in showroom. The building’s ground floor is set lower than the roadway, so the second floor commands a view of Route 114 and the Northshore Mall across the street.

“If I can do that, I will figure out if I will put a dealership there or not,” said Kelly, who has also fielded interest from retailers looking to set up shop there.

This is not Kelly’s first attempt at setting up a dealership in Tanner City along Route 114. In 2010, Kelly acquired the former North Shore Lincoln Mercury at 1 Cross St., which is adjacent to the Northshore Mall.

Kelly considers this a prime location for a dealership, but he has waited to open something there, in part because of the slow economy, and in part because of the site, which is on a slope and needs expensive work.

“I want to take my time and do something right,” Kelly said.

Kelly said he has not figured out where he might move his Danvers Fiat dealership, though he said it is doing well, and there are new models coming soon. The location at 72 Andover St. was always viewed as temporary.

Kelly plans to build a nearly 32,200-square-foot, single-story Volkswagen dealership, which will have a front wall made of glass and aluminum, according to plans by BKA Architects. The Fiat building will be demolished to make way for the new building. The 4.7-acre site has been the home of auto dealerships for many years. A back building on the site is partially located in Peabody.

The new dealership will have a showroom, a small mezzanine, a service department, a parts storage area and offices. It will meet all of the town’s zoning setback requirements, which are not being met by the present buildings, according to the application filed by Danvers attorney Nancy McCann.

The back building will get a face-lift and be used for vehicle storage. Danvers Senior Planner Kate Day said the Volkswagen project is one of the larger commercial projects to come before the town in recent years, next to the construction of a much larger indoor soccer facility farther west on 114.

The Volkswagen dealership will take a year to build, Kelly said. It operates now across the Lowe’s access road from his Infiniti dealership, also on 114.

When asked about what is driving the construction of the new dealership, Kelly said “factories are doing better, and they are pushing facility upgrades.”

Within the next three years, Kelly plans to upgrade his Infiniti dealership, as well.

Auto retailers have been increasing their presence in and around Route 114 in recent years, in addition to Kelly’s dealerships.

Ira Motor Group has Porsche, Lexus, Mazda, Audi, Scion, Subaru and Toyota dealerships at various locations along Andover Street in Danvers and Peabody. Ira bought the former Jimmy’s Allenhurst function facility in Danvers and had that building demolished as part of its expansion plans.

Herb Chambers is planning to enlarge its Chrysler Jeep Dodge Ram dealership and is mulling a stand-alone Cadillac dealership at its Chevrolet dealership across the street.

Acura of Peabody, which is part of the Lyon-Waugh Auto Group, has a new location along Route 114 in Peabody. Acura’s former home is now a Lyon-Waugh Mini Cooper dealership. Lyon-Waugh also operates a large BMW dealership in Peabody, next door to its Mini dealership.

Not far away but within sight of Route 114, Village Automotive Group operates Hyundai and Volvo dealerships on Commonwealth Avenue, across from the Liberty Tree Mall. Further down Sylvan Street in Danvers sits Danvers Motor Co.’s Ford dealership. Finally, a Michaud Mitsubishi dealership sits next door to where Kelly plans to build his new Volkswagen store.
